5 Common Affiliate Marketing Scams To Watch Out For

This may be of interest to you.

Affiliate marketing is a legitimate industry. There are no two ways about that. Don't let anyone tell you the whole industry is a scam!

However, there definitely are some affiliate marketing scams that we've seen people fall prey to. This often happens to newbies and leaves them with a bad taste in their mouths.

We don't want you to become disillusioned with affiliate marketing, so keep reading and stay safe.

Affiliate Marketing Scam Examples

Like any other online industry, there are plenty of scams doing the rounds in the world of affiliate marketing. Scammers (unfortunately) are always trying to find new ways to make money off innocent affiliates.

These are some of the most common affiliate marketing scams we've come across.

1. Fake Affiliate Marketing Training

Most newbie affiliates like to do a training course to get started in the industry. There will be hundreds of people trying to sell you a course, an e-book, a webinar and various other kinds of information. Do your research before you pick your training program.

Many of these training programs are often nothing more than a rip-off. You don't actually learn anything useful and you're out whatever money you spent, as well. At the most, you might get an e-book that is full of fluff and no real, actionable lessons. So make sure do your training with a well known name.

Check out AffiloBlueprint – a step-by-step system for newbies that shows you how to build an income from your website.

2. Get-Rich-Quick Offers

The reason affiliate marketing gets such a bad rap is because of the proliferation of get-rich-quick offers everywhere. They promise you will make thousands of dollars overnight, or that you can just work 2 hours a day and have $5,000 in your bank account at the end of the week.

Don't fall for it.

get rich quick offer

If anyone tries to sell you a "secret system that works," don't believe them. Legitimate affiliate marketing takes a bit of time to learn and while you will make money from it, it doesn't happen overnight. You need a strategy and you need to implement it well before you make any income.

3. No Product/Service to Sell

Affiliate marketers make their money by promoting someone else's product or services. If a company is promising you thousands of dollars in income, look closer. What is it that you're actually selling? If there is no actual product or service, it's nothing more than a scam.

These affiliate marketing "opportunities" are designed like pyramid schemes where no one is actually making any money. You make an investment to join the program and after that, money is just passed around from one person to the next. These schemes are totally illegal! You will lose your investment, and you're not going to make any affiliate income from it, either.

4. Pay-To-Join Programs

Real, legitimate affiliate programs are free to join. An authentic affiliate program should be risk-free for affiliates. You should never have to pay a fee to sign up to a program. If you are asked to pay a fee to join, steer clear. It is most likely an illegal multi-level marketing scheme.

Be sure to check out our forum post on how to tell the legitimacy of an affiliate program

5. Domain Name Scams

This was a popular scam doing the rounds a couple of years ago. Say you owned the domain abc.com. You would receive an email (usually from China) telling you that someone is trying to register the domain name abc.cn in China. They are emailing you out of concern as they have noticed you own the .com domain. They want to make sure your trademark is protected in China.

If you fall for the blatant lie, they will tell you as the original owner of the particular business name, they will give you preference. So you have the right to register the abc.cn domain name with them, first. You will be sent a price list and they will make money off you by making you purchase a domain name that you didn't ever need.

There are a few other variations of this type of scam, so beware of any random emails concerning your domain names.

How to Avoid Internet Affiliate Marketing Scams

The rule of thumb before signing up for any affiliate program or affiliate training course is to do your due diligence. There are some well known and reputable programs and courses in the industry (including ours!) but when you're new, it's hard to tell.

Follow these tips to make sure you don't get caught up in an affiliate marketing scam.

Ask Google

The easiest way to find out the legitimacy of any affiliate program or training course is to Google it. If it's a well known scam, you will more than likely see reports about it online. If you can't tell just by searching for the name, try searching for variations, such as "[affiliate program name] scam" or "[affiliate program name] ripoff." You can also search for "[affiliate program name] reviews," etc.

The Company Website

If Google isn't yielding much information, head straight to the company website. Legitimate companies in the affiliate marketing industry always have professional websites. If this is not the case, it should raise a red flag for you.

Genuine Commission Percentage

As an affiliate, you will make money off commissions. If a company is offering a ridiculously high commission percentage, don't believe it straight away. It's not impossible (some programs really are quite generous), but it's better to do your research and see if they really pay out their affiliates. Also, make sure the products and services they offer are genuine and of good quality.

If It's Too Good To Be True

The bottom line is, if something is too good to be true, you are better off being suspicious about it. Be wary of unrealistic offers, easy money schemes and any businesses (especially foreign) offering to help you with something out of the blue.

Use your common sense and you have nothing to worry about. There are hundreds of genuine and completely legitimate ways to make money as an affiliate. Be aware of the affiliate marketing scams, but don't let them keep you up at night!

How To Get More Value Out of Google Search

This may be of interest to you.

Google provides us with enormous information, and it has allowed us to find the value we need quickly. If you think back several years ago, you’ll remember how search engines were so complicated and the results were even more. For example, you’d type in a search phrase and the engine would return low quality results. However, things have changed enormously and search engines now provide more value than ever before. The cool thing now is that search engines are able to provide bloggers valuable insight into what’s trending. They can then use this information to write more targeted information that ultimately resonates with readers. However, I’m surprised at the amount of people who don’t make use of the other information displayed in Google. For example, you’ve probably noticed:

  • Google News
  • Google Questions
  • Related-to results
  • Google Alerts

I’ll like to discuss some of these right now because over the years this has helped me put together better content. I believe you’ll be able to do the same. This will help you rank higher within the SERPS and allow you to write content which converts with your readers. Let’s get started and your feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Google News

Many times as bloggers we’ll write content based on news we hear. We’ll also like to add quotes or reference what we have heard in the news about the topic we are writing about. With that said, it’s important you make use of the Google News section because this will help you find up-to-date information which you can use in your content. For example, I have a blog that provides help to people living with Bipolar Disorder. Since this is a topic which requires a lot of references it’s important I have statistics to add into my content. Whenever I do a search within Google about medication, research, etc., I’ll make sure to check out the news section to read new studies being done on medication or general research on bipolar.

Method: The method is very simple to view the Google News search. Head over to Google, and do a search typing in your main keyword or phrase. After select search, then towards the top next to the image tab, you’ll see one which says “News”. Once you click that, you’ll see the recent news based on the keyword you used during the initial search process. To find more targeted news, it’s a good idea to be as targeted when typing in your keyword phrase.

Google News is awesome because it gives you up to date news in real-time. This is why it’s important to go back and check the news a few times a day. However, you can also setup Google Alerts which I’ll be discussing later on in more detail.

Remember, Google News search is awesome for those bloggers who need to add some real research, stats, etc. to their content.

Google Questions

I was reading content published by Neil Patel, and he introduced something cool to me which I had no clue about before. Google Questions that display in between results when you type in question like search terms. However, it’s what you can do as a blogger which makes it so powerful. For example, as bloggers we are always looking for ways to improve the bottom-line. We want to provide solutions to common problems people are having. We want to find common questions, and write the best possible content available online…right? Google questions is a great way to find out what people have been asking and then write out answers customized to meet their needs. Here’s a strategy I like to use which has increased my traffic by 15% in as little as 3 months.

  • Start with my target keyword phrase and hit search. Skim through the search results looking for some of the questions that appear.
  • Write down a list of questions so I ca research them a bit further.
  • Head over to Google Keyword Planner and look for keywords related to the questions to check search volume, competition, etc. This will come in handy when I write content, and need to include keywords in the content itself.
  • Head over to Buzzumo.com and type in keywords to check competitor content. This is important so you write content better then all others online. This will spark social media buzz, and increase traffic quickly. It’s about providing the best value online, and you have to stand out compared to your competition.

Google Questions makes it easier for you to find out what others are typing because they show only popular questions. This is good because you know which way to direct your focus when writing your content.

Related-To

This is something relatively new compared to a lot of the other features. Awesome to find other related terms to your main keyword phrase. I like to use this section to find other long-tail and target keywords to add into my content before publishing. However, you want to choose keywords which are precise to your bottom-line. For example, if you are writing about link building, then it’s a good idea to look for “related-to” terms which include link building within them too. Next, you can do exactly what was mentioned above which is to head over to Buzzumo.com and look for competitor content based on these keywords. This will allow you to find ways to improve your overall content making it way better than your competition. For example, look for ways to include videos, images, infographics, etc to stand out compared to all other content published. Why do I keep emphasizing this?

Social media is huge and if your competitor content has been shared thousands of times then imagine what this will do for you when you put together something more improved…right? Having the best content online will ensure you get the MOST social media shares which in turn is great for your bottom-line.

Google Alerts

This is another cool concept, and I am using Google Alerts simply because I want the same information sent to me every day. Google Alerts is something you can setup using a combination of keywords, phrases, etc to get up-to-date news sent to you when it happens. I use Google Alerts to get updates on new link building and content marketing methods coming into play. Next, I have used Google Alerts for my bipolar blog because it’s important to me that I have the best research and testing news available at all times. The cool thing is to setup Google Alerts is NOT hard at all because all it takes is a few clicks. Head over to Google Alerts to get started and follow the steps. They have provided more than enough information on the entire process.

Others

Right from the Google search bar, you have many other options available, and the one you choose depends on your niche. It also depends on your purpose, for example if you have an image, video or infographic website. The point I’m making is that we sometimes get caught up in purchasing tools or looking outside the box to find the information we need. However, sometimes sticking to Google search is good enough to find all the information we are looking for. Head over to Google search, and take some time to explore the options you have available. See how you can incorporate what’s available to your content or blogging.

Final Thoughts

Google search is always being improved to give you the best information. Through a simple search command, you’ll be able to find enormous value from every search. However, you have to know how to use the other commands in order for you to find the valuable keywords, phrases, etc. In this content I went over some of the MOST valuable search tools available with the click of a mouse button. Here they are again:

Google News – A great tool to find trending news on your niche. I use it to find research being done on bipolar, and new medication statistics. You can use this in order to find the latest news within your industry too.

Google Questions – Neil Patel introduced me to this part, and it can be used to find the MOST trending questions. Create a list of the questions, then create a high value piece of content. Use Buzzsumo.com to find competitors which have written on the same topic. Find ways to improve your content going forward by adding videos, images, infographics, etc. Social media will be your best friend to build traffic, and get your content in front of niche-relevant people.

Related-To – This section has been around for some time however you need to know how to use it when writing content. When you type a search in Google, you’ll see the “related-to” towards the bottom. Use it to find other related terms or phrases that you can add into your content. This is great to find long-tail keywords, and find other phrases which are slowly gaining traction.

Google Alerts

I started to play around with Google Alerts this year. This really helps me because I have a bipolar blog which requires up to date information. It’s very easy to setup, and you can get the MOST up-to-date information right to your inbox in real-time. I’m surprised at the amount of people who don’t take advantage of Google Alerts. All that’s required is a gmail.com account, and after a few clicks you’ll be setup. Add your keywords, questions, related keywords, etc. That’s all!

Start by going through the content, and utilizing the strategies discuss. See which ones work best for you, then optimize them going forward.

Top Fitness Affiliate Programs

This may be of interest to you.

This week’s niche is focused on getting physically fit! If you have not started any fitness programs yet, you’re not alone (LOL). But if you are an affiliate marketer and you are looking for a new website to create and promote, then it’s about time you check out the top fitness affiliate programs we have for you here.

Let's start by visiting sample websites to get an idea of how to succeed in this particular niche. Like this site, Nerd Fitness. I love the overall look and feel of the site as it clearly spells P-O-S-I-T-I-V-I-T-Y! This site is very well targeted at people who want to get fit and motivated all the time.

Another example of a fitness site is body+soul, which is more generalized than the previous one. This site tackles a variety of health and wellness topics. Nonetheless, it has a dedicated page for fitness topics. Additionally, what I love about this site is the overall magazine-like aesthetic. It appeals to me, which makes sense, because the content and layout are geared towards women.

What Is Fitness?

Let's Google Define It!

"What is fitness?" This is the exact phrase I Googled, and the snippet of information that Google provided was:

The Definition of Fitness

According to Google, the best definition of the word “fitness” is someone who is not only fit but also healthy. If you take this in context, fitness embodies the physical, mental, and emotional condition of a person.

In contrast to similar niches like the health or bodybuilding niche, the fitness niche is focused on the development of both physique and health.

Is There Demand Online?

Weighing the Fitness Niche's Popularity

Recent data from Statista indicates that the global fitness and health industry's revenue amounts to around $80 billion USD per year.

In North America (US + Canada) alone, the market was estimated at a whopping $28 billion in 2015.

Google Trends shares quite a positive forecast for the fitness niche. Based on the "interest over time" graph, interest in the keyword “fitness” has been constantly high for the last five years, as shown:

Google Trends Data for "Fitness"

The top 5 countries where the keyword “fitness” is most frequently searched for are (in order from highest to lowest):

  1. Denmark
  2. Australia
  3. The United States
  4. Switzerland
  5. Canada

On social media, BuzzSumo also shows a large number of shares for fitness topics across popular social media sites (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+). That gives us an idea of how popular this niche is on the Internet!

BuzzSumo Data for "Fitness"

Based on the demand and popularity data presented above, there's no doubt that fitness is a good niche to cover.

Keyword Research

"Build Up" Your Fitness Keywords

Let's “work out” our keywords for this niche. A bit of a disclaimer here before we start: Remember that the keywords we feature on our NOTW posts are NOT the only recommended keywords for the niche. You need to choose your own keywords, meaning pick the keywords that best fit the target audience for your niche site.

Get Your Seed Keywords from Google Search Results

Always start by identifying seed keywords that you can use to find more keywords. Since the fitness niche is very, very broad, I'll check out Google for seed keyword ideas:

Fitness Keywords

I have encircled the keywords that appear on the first page of the search results for the term “fitness,” which I can use to find my seed keywords.

These keywords are shown on the Google SERPs because Google decided that these are the most relevant keywords to the term searched.

Gather More Seed Keywords in 3 Easy Ways Using AffiloTools

Now to collect further seed keywords, I will re-enter the keywords that I have found on Google in the AffiloTools keyword research section. You can easily gather seed keywords using AffiloTools in 3 ways:

1. Use the keyword research tool

For instructions on how to do keyword research using AffiloTools, click here.

Here are the keyword match results for the term "video workouts":

"Video Workouts" Keyword Research in AffiloTools

2. Get more seed keywords in AffiloTools’ related keywords section

If you are not satisfied with the keywords, you may switch tabs to “Related Keywords” to get more keyword ideas, as shown below:

Related Keywords for "Video Workouts" in AffiloTools

3. Type the URL of a similar site into AffiloTools to get the site’s keywords

While still using AffiloTools’ keyword research tool, simply enter the URL of a similar site to get the keywords used for that site:

Finding Competitor Keywords in AffiloTools

Re-run the Keywords in Traffic Travis

We always get these questions in support: “How do you pick the keywords in AffiloTools?” "Do you base the selection on competition?"

Personally, when I am in the process of collecting my seed keywords, I do not check the competition yet. What I do is to gather ALL POSSIBLE keywords for my site. Then, once I am done with my keyword list, I re-run the keywords in Traffic Travis to check out the competitiveness of each keyword.

Another question you may ask is, “Why do you need to re-run your keywords in Traffic Travis when you can get the competition data in AffiloTools?”

If you are doing SEO, this is important. The competition data in AffiloTools is based on paid search, NOT organic search. This is the reason why you need to check the competition in Traffic Travis, since TT supplies you with competition data based on organic search.

How to Market the Niche

Get a Fit Link-Building Strategy

Driving traffic to your site is challenging yet essential. You need to get traffic to convert to sales.

There are several ways to drive traffic to your site, both paid and unpaid, so it's easy to get stuck on this part of affiliate marketing. If you want to get going right after you get your site up, then you need to create a link-building strategy in the early stages of building the site.

Some elements you can include in your link-building strategy for the fitness niche are:

Content Strategy

Content strategy is the art of managing the content on your site, from research to publication. There's a lot of information on fitness and wellness that you can publish on your site: proper diet, fitness routines, various workouts, etc. A good content strategy will help you better research and organize your articles and keep your site regularly updated.

Blog and Forum Commenting

There are plenty of fitness forums and blogs you can participate in. The good thing about this niche is that it is closely related to muscle building and weight loss, so you can go to sites in those niches too.

Keep in mind that you're not only building links when you're participating in blogs and forums, you're also building your site's online presence. So instead of simply building links with keyword-rich anchor texts in your blog comments, forum signatures and posts, provide comments that are useful to the readers. Make yourself an authority in your niche.

Link Baiting

There are plenty of authority sites in this niche. Instead of competing with these sites, use them as sources for your articles. Once an article is complete, you can write to the owner of the sites you cited and let them know you've linked to them. Most website owners will link back to your article as long as it's good and useful to their audience.

You don't have to limit yourself to articles. You can create infographics or videos and refer to the source site. The more shareable and useful the content, the more likely website owners will link back to it, so take the time to create high-quality content for link baiting.

The fitness niche, just like weight loss and muscle building, is highly lucrative. And just like the weight loss niche, it's something anyone can relate to and be interested in.

But just like any other evergreen niche, there's plenty of competition. Not a bad thing, though! You can always find a workaround for any competitive niche out there. Be sure to do your research, pick out a sub-niche to focus on, and plan a link-building strategy. You will need all of these to make your venture into this niche a profitable one.

Are Affiliate Marketers Too Cool for School?

This may be of interest to you.

There has been a longstanding discussion among digital marketers about whether college is necessary, and there are quite a few successful marketers with little or no college education.

Shawn playing bongos in college

That is a whole lot different from when I was growing up. My dad expected my brother and me to go to college, get a good job, and live a happy life. It was a natural progression.

I was all in, despite not having any money for college or much interest in being in a classroom. I did what was expected and then took out loans only to come away from my first semester with a 1.0 on nine credits.

My major started out as Pre-Journalism, but when I landed on academic probation I was instructed to pursue a different major, which ended up being Radio, TV & Film.

That was mostly interesting, but after a year or so I had to look for another major because a lot of the classes were being phased out. I moved on to Communications and got my BA there after ten semesters and some summer sessions.

I also walked away with student loan debt, and I struggled to find any sort of job. My first glamorous position was as a front desk clerk at a Comfort Inn & Suites for $5.50 an hour. I later moved up the ladder as a Blockbuster Video assistant manager for a wage of $7.00 per hour.

I bounced around for several years after college as a low wage, low skill guy with debt. What happened to the good job I figured was automatic if I got my education?

I never took a marketing or business class, but I managed to stumble into a job as an affiliate manager at 27-years-old. The industry was new and I had the privilege of making up how I would do things. Nobody was learning affiliate marketing in college. Nobody was learning it in any formal environment. It was a small group of self-taught pioneers.

But I was grateful I got my degree. It wasn’t just the diploma or classes I sat it, but the process of college. The maturity, the experiences. I ended up doing a lot of things outside the classroom that were related to school, such as founding a profitable newspaper for the Greek system, holding offices in my fraternity, balancing budgets, dealing with school and city officials, and other real-world experience.

While many tech companies, including Apple, Google, and IBM do not require a degree, there are still a great many companies that do mandate one for consideration.

If I was doing it all over again I’d still go to college, and I’m encouraging my kids to do the same if that’s the path they want to take.

Since each of my four kids was born I’ve funded 529 plans for each of them to be covered for four years at a state school. My firstborn is a college sophomore and my second is taking her SATs. I didn’t learn what I wanted to do until my late 20s, so I want them to make their own choices.
